West Midlands

September 2018

We have been busy in the West Midlands. To end 2017 our annual event with tea and cake took place in November at the University of Birmingham with the topic of “Innovations in the Management of Neurological Conditions”. We hosted three speakers who had received ACPIN funding for research or study. The diverse topics range from Functional Neurological Disorders, to the relevance of Nutrition and sedentary behaviour for Neurological Patients. This was another popular event.

To begin 2018 we filled the lecture theatre for our AGM and lecture ‘Half a world away’ where we welcomed Dr David Punt from the University of Birmingham to speak about his work on neglect in stroke patients. Over 70 people attended the lecture including students and some occupational therapists.

We were also pleased to have local representation at the ACPIN conference in Manchester in March the form of a poster on ‘The evidence for the clinical effectiveness of electrical stimulation to prevent and reduce shoulder subluxation after stroke’. This was presented by Trish Edwards, a local member who received an ACPIN grant towards her MSc studies at Coventry University.

Our courses in 2018 have included Ben Ellis on ‘Observational gait analysis using the Movement Science approach’ in May, which was kindly hosted by our new committee members Katie Halford and Michelle Standeven at Solihull Hospital and was fully booked. Following on from this Ben will be leading another practical course on balance in late September.

Our committee remains small and we continue to seek members from other parts of the West Midlands to join us and consider hosting events. Please do email us for further information about any of our courses, or if you would like to become involved in our committee. We are always keen to hear your ideas for future courses or ways we can support our members.
